Accessibility
The Humane Society of Atchison wants this website to be usable by everyone, including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, screen magnification, or speech input.

Our commitment
We are working toward the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. To be straightforward: we consider this site partially conformant. Most of it meets that standard and some parts do not yet. The gaps we know about are listed below. Accessibility is ongoing rather than a project that finishes.
What is built into this site
- A skip link. Pressing Tab when a page loads offers a "Skip to main content" link.
- Keyboard navigation. Menus, forms, filters, the photo viewer, and dialogs can be operated without a mouse; dialogs close with the Escape key.
- Descriptions for images. Animal and event photos carry written descriptions, and decorative icons are hidden from screen readers so they add no noise.
- Clear structure. Pages use proper headings, landmarks, and lists so a screen reader can move through them in a logical order.
- Labeled forms. Every field has a visible label, and form results are announced in a status region rather than shown by color alone.
- Respect for motion settings. If your device asks for reduced motion, animations and slide-in effects are turned off.
- Text that scales. Layouts reflow rather than overflow when text is enlarged or the screen is narrow.
Display preferences
Every page on this site has an accessibility button that opens a panel of display settings. You can change text size, line height and letter spacing, switch to a higher-contrast or inverted color scheme, mute or remove color, use a more readable typeface, enlarge the cursor, turn on a reading guide or reading mask, pause animations, and highlight links and headings. There are also one-tap presets for common needs.
Your choices are saved in your own browser and are remembered the next time you visit. Nothing is sent to a server, no account is needed, and no cookies are set.
These settings are a convenience, not a substitute for building the site properly. The structure, labeling, keyboard support and contrast described above are built into the pages themselves, and this site is meant to work with your own screen reader, magnifier or browser settings whether you use that button or not. If something here does not work for you, that is a fault we want to fix. Please tell us using the details below.
Known limitations
- The map on the Contact page is an embedded Google Map, which has its own accessibility characteristics we do not control. The written address and a "Get directions" link are provided alongside it.
- Event flyers uploaded by staff are images; the event's title, date, and location are always provided as text next to the flyer, but text inside the artwork itself may not be.
- Color contrast has been designed to the standard but has not yet been independently audited across every page state.
- Third-party sites we link to (Facebook, Amazon, Chewy, Google Calendar) are outside our control.
Tell us about a problem
If you find a page or feature that is hard to use, please send us a message, email adoptions@humanesocietyofatchison.org, or call (913) 367-3647. Tell us the page and what happened, and we will work on a fix and get you what you needed in the meantime.
