About Us
A local, community-supported shelter dedicated to the animals of Atchison County.
Compassion for every animal
The Humane Society of Atchison exists to protect animals from neglect, abuse, and exploitation; to adopt animals into loving homes; and to reduce pet overpopulation through education and adoption. We advocate for animal welfare and work every day to promote compassion for all animal life in our community.
Rescue & shelter
We take in dogs and cats in need and give them safe housing, food, medical care, and a lot of affection while they wait for a family.
Adoption
We match every animal with the right home, walk families through the process, and cheer when they head out the door together.
Volunteers & fosters
Neighbors walk dogs, socialize cats, help at events, and open their homes to animals who need a quiet place to heal.
Education
We teach responsible pet ownership at events, in schools, and online so fewer animals need us in the first place.
History of the Humane Society of Atchison
The Humane Society of Atchison was formed in 1991. Originally, animals were housed at the farm of board member Laura Kahl. Construction began on the present building in 1997 and was completed in 2000. The Humane Society of Atchison is a No-Kill shelter, euthanizing only aggressive or terminally ill animals. At present, the Humane Society of Atchison is housing both dogs and cats.
We have many outreach programs in our area. We offer one to two free vaccination and rabies clinics to the public each year. We are extremely community-minded, offering public education on the care of companion animals and volunteer programs for juniors and adults. We make periodic nursing home visits with our shelter dogs and work with area agencies in abuse and neglect investigations.
